Henry Cavill Reveals Highlander Reboot Will Delve ‘Deeper’ Into the Lore & Takes a ‘Big Swing’
Highlander lead Henry Cavill calls the reboot’s script “extraordinary.”
Highlander lead Henry Cavill has teased the upcoming reboot, which is now finally happening after several years of exciting updates from director Chad Stahelski. Speaking recently with Josh Horowitz, Cavill kept some things close to his chest regarding the Highlander project, but did reveal that the reboot will go much “deeper” into the lore of the immortals than the previous movie and TV series. Check out what Cavill had to say below.
“I’m gonna have to answer that very carefully. I was a Highlander fan. They were great fun movies. Obviously, I watched them when I was a lot younger, and since rewatched. But also the TV show. I really enjoyed the lore behind it. That sort of sense of a tragic warrior, with more of a story to tell than just a cool guy with a cool sword doing cool things. And this goes even deeper into that.”
Describing the script for the Highlander script as “extraordinary,” Cavill teased that the reboot could feature connections to the original Highlander franchise, including the TV series from the ‘90s.
“I can’t speak to [how much the Highlander film goes into the TV show] at the moment. What they’ve done so far and what we’re doing with the development of the script is extraordinary. I think people are gonna be really, really pleased.”
While keeping details of the Highlander reboot under wraps, Cavill did promise that the movie will be a “big swing,” with both himself and Chad Stahelski willing for audiences to hate the movie in their pursuit of trying something unexpected.
“Big swings are important. You play it safe and you go ‘eh, I guess it was fine.’ But you take a big swing, and people love it. Or they hate it, and sometimes hating it is just as good.”
Highlander Is Now Due for Release in 2026
Fans of the Highlander have been waiting years for the reboot to take off, with Cavill finally confirming his role in the project and revealing that his sword training is all set to begin soon.
“The training is about to begin in earnest. It’ll be a very long training process, and I’m very excited to get into it. There’s only so much I can tell you at the moment. I want to keep everything under wraps for as long as possible.”
The Highlander reboot is expected to follow a similar plot to the 1986 original, which follows swordsman Connor MacLeod as he discovers that he is one of a number of immortal warriors who can be 𝓀𝒾𝓁𝓁ed only by beheading. After living somewhat peacefully for several centuries, MacLeod settles in New York City and is soon dragged back onto the battlefield when his greatest enemy returns to 𝓀𝒾𝓁𝓁 him and thus obtain “the Prize.”
Henry Cavill, meanwhile, can currently be seen in the spy comedy, Argylle, and will soon lead the WWII action outing The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare from director Guy Ritchie. Check out the recently released trailer below.
