Meghan Markle’s career as an actress has likely been 𝓀𝒾𝓁𝓁ed by the notoriety she has gained as the Duchess of Sus𝓈ℯ𝓍, according to an expert.

Following the Duke and Duchess of Sus𝓈ℯ𝓍’s decision to quit their senior royal roles and their relocation to California, speculation swirled over a possible return to acting by Meghan.

In late 2020, the Sus𝓈ℯ𝓍es launched their productions company, Archewell Productions, and have since announced a series of fiction and non-fiction programmes, in some of which the Duchess is to play the role of executive producer.

But a return for Meghan in front of the camera has been ruled out by Channel 5’s royal correspondent Simon Vigar.

Speaking to The Sun’s royal correspondent Matt Wilkinson about Meghan’s media career, Mr Vigar said: “I think the media career, or relighting the screen career as an actress, I think that’s a long shot, because you can never see her as a character now, you are going to see Meghan, the Duchess, so that’s difficult.

“How can you believe that she is anybody else other than the person that we know so well?”

Speaking about the multi-year deal struck by Prince Harry and Meghan in 2020 with streaming giant Netflix, the expert added: “And as I understand it, with Netflix they still have a deal there, who are going to want their pound of flesh, obviously.”

Meghan has indeed been in front of the camera in the productions released by Netflix so far, but as herself rather than to play a role.

Most notably, in the biographical docu-series Harry & Meghan, the Sus𝓈ℯ𝓍es recounted their love story and struggles with the British press and the Firm, which led to them deciding to relocate to the US.

Archewell Productions has announced two upcoming series for Netflix, one focused on polo, a sport beloved by Harry, and another focused on lifestyle-centric topics such as gardening and cooking.

This latter series will likely feature Meghan and may allow her to cross-promote her new brand, American Riviera Orchard – which has recently soft-launched its new product, strawberry jam.

Speaking about Meghan’s future media career, Mr Vigar added: “She is obviously a mum of two young kids, that’s clearly the priority, but once they are in school and off doing more stuff and need less constant care then I am sure the media career will grow. It’s hard to see it in fiction though, being an actress.”

Before beginning her whirlwind romance with Prince Harry in 2016, Meghan had become an established actor based in Toronto.

After taking part in a series of minor roles in TV programmes and Hollywood productions, she had her big break in the legal drama Suits, in which she played the role of Rachel Zane between 2011 and 2018.
